Chapter Six

Inkiri had carried me back to our room. I was half asleep, and he was making all the best clicking noises at me.

When I woke up, it was still dark out, and Inkiri was sleeping, spooning me. And that would have been fine, but of course, I needed to pee.

I wiggled out of his arms as carefully as I could, but he didn’t much stir. I smiled at the sound of his deep, even breaths. Worrying all this time had to have taken its toll on him, even if he wasn’t one to show it much, but he definitely deserved some rest.

I rolled off the bedding and got to my feet, careful not to fall over his swords. The faint outline of the windows was everything I could see, and so I felt around the room by touch and memory. I was super proud of myself for making it into the bathroom, and when I slid the door shut behind me, I actually found a switch there, which… was totally a light switch.

The illumination was milky, but still too bright. I got my business done, turned off the light, and headed back to bed, but I didn’t really feel like lying down again quite yet.

I felt around for that basket of clothes and found it with my big toe in what was the kind of slapstick way that made me glad it was dark in the room and my monster with the night vision was still breathing slow and steady in his sleep.

I wasn’t sure what clothes I was pulling on, but by the size, they were Inkiri’s, just his shirt, which easily reached to my knees. It would have to do. I felt my way toward the sliding door, which was easier since I could see the windows and could navigate the room from there.

The night air was cool, and I took a deep breath after closing the sliding door behind me. The scent of the blooming moors was heavy on the air, heavier now than it had been during the day, and when I stepped to the railing of the porch, I gasped.

The moons were clustered above, three perfect coins against a star-strewn sky, and their combined light made the pale purple and bluish flowers in the garden stand out like a mirror of the starry sky. It was so pretty, prettier than anything I had seen in a long time.

“You look like a ghost, you know.”

I made a muffled noise and nearly fell on my ass when I turned toward the speaker, and my heart thundered, spilling the fear I knew so well straight into my bloodstream when a shadow to my left moved: horns, head, bright eyes. It took my brain a moment to recognize the false alarm, because this was just Vergis. So maybe not entirely a false alarm.

“You effing scared the bejesus out of me,” I said.

“Did you pee yourself?”

“What? No! Of course I didn’t pee myself.”

“Then I didn’t scare you that much.”

“What
